Friend in a Box

I am a Bristol based lampworker practising for nearly 20 years, I have not got bored yet!

I started by making beads and then experimented with animals and loved coming up with new designs. The  menagerie has expanded over the years to about 40 species now They come nestled in their own cosy sawdust filled box, leading to the name a ‘friend in a box’.

The process involves using a propane/oxygen mixed flame to melt different coloured glass rods. Once heated, I use fine tools and gravity to shape the glass into the animal. It takes a lot of practice and can be very frustrating but it is fun once you have the knack!
